It is true that the hyphens used for the separators between melismatic syllables are selected from the lyric font, but it turns out that there is a way to change the height. All one need do is, after all of the editing on the lyrics is complete, open the "edit lyrics" dialog box, select each hyphen you want to change, and then change the font. If you want a lower hyphen, you can either change the size of the font (a 6 point hyphen will be lower--although also thinner and shorter--than a twelve point one, and vice versa), or the font itself. Selecting a font with a higher hyphen than the one you are using will raise it, selecting a font with a lower hyphen than the one you are using will lower it.

Yeah, but it looks ugly when the hyphen is the wrong size.

The Edit Lyrics window allows superscript, subscript and baseline shift to selected text. This ought to be just the ticket, but then when you return to page view none of these text effects are implemented.

That's in 2k2. Maybe it's fixed in 2k4. If the text changes aren't going to work on the page, they shouldn't be allowed in the Edit Lyrics window.
