so following up on my $66.37 customs bill for the shipment of finale... makemusic has credited me for the $16 brokerage fee,

Wow, that's great! (Do you think I can get them to retroactively pay the brokerage fee on my copy of Finale 98?)

and the broker has reimbursed me for the highly questionable $25 fee "code 396: tariff data base update" (on a T-shirt valued at $5!!!!!!): it seems i convincingly argued that there is no way the individual client should be charged for such tasks.

You must be an uncommonly persuasive negotiator.

the solution to avoiding brokerage fees (it is true that DHL applies none on makemusic shipments) is to always have the order addressed as follows:
YOUR NAME
c/o YOUR INSTITUTION

even though i specifically stated that the package must be addressed to me, c/o institution, the first line in makemusic's database-generated waybill is the institution, which, being in the first position on the waybill, is therefore considered to be the client. in such cases, DHL automatically hands over the paperwork to the institution's broker (eg. PBB global logistics), who then applies their own brokerage fee to the shipment.

Well, that never applied to me since I never shipped c/o any institution, so while that trick is definitely good to know for all of Coda's Canadian customers, it's not actually a foolproof solution unless you can also make sure that Coda [I'm sorry, I know that's wrong but I just refuse to call them "MakeMusic," "Net4Music," or any of the other crappy names they've gone through recently. "Coda" was a perfectly good name, and just because they were stupid enough to abandon it doesn't mean I have to do the same] never ships you anything using those gouging bastards at UPS.

Meanwhile, I hope you're having a wonderful time at the Banff Arts Center. What a beautiful location. I could use some of that cool mountain air right about now -- it's still 22C at night here, with 88% humidity. If this is what May is like in New York, I shudder to think how bad it will be by July.
