I�m using the slur tool to tie the two notes together. Is there another tool I should be using instead, or another way of entering the first note of the group?

Yes, there is another tool. From Simple Entry, choose the Tie Tool (the one picturing two quarter notes tied together) and click on the first of the two notes you want tied. Alternatively, you can enter the tie in Speedy entry by highlighting the first of the two notes and pressing the "=" or "T" key. Selecting the second note and pressing Shift and the "T" key will tie backwards.
