Hi Paul,

I have done neither of these things but neither of them are difficult. However, if you are going to install OS X on this machine, I do recommend max-ing out the RAM first. As always, be sure test any hardware upgrades such as RAM in an existing OS installation (OS 8.6 or OS 9 or whatever your sister is currently running) before upgrading the OS.
