select staff tool, partial measures (edit menu), and apply HIDE style to a region of 0 to 100 EDUs (or some other appropriate value). with some staff styles, you can only apply to the full measure, if this is the case, apply HIDE to full measure and select partial measure from 100 EDUs (or some other appropriate value) to the end of measure and hit clear.
