Reading what Dennis W. Manasco wrote (quoted below, in part) leads me to
believe that there are a number of people who did not carefully read the
license agreement upon installation. The fact is, MakeMusic!'s present
policy with respect to software installation, even with the mandatory
registation authentication code, is more liberal than it was up through
version 2k3. Up until that time, under the terms of the license, you
were permitted installation on one computer at a time. Starting with
2k4, although you have to obtain a registration authentication key, you
are allowed installation on two. All MakeMusic! has done is to set up a
procedure to try to help assure them that you are abiding by the license
agreement you entered into when you installed the computer. And the
fact is, they are not doing that all that aggressively. Due to hardware
problems, I had to reinstall 2k4 several times, and I never had a
problem getting an authentification code; further, thinking back, since
neither of the computers upon which I have Finale installed are
connected to the internet, the only way MakeMusic could be sure that I
am only using the installation on two machines would be to send someone
here to physically look, and they've not done so.
[Moving to a subscription service for copyright protection purposes]
by Coda that profoundly angers me: I would dearly love to send them
money to purchase the latest version but, as David Fenton said (while
making a reference to subscription models in general),
I'd never risk my data to that. And I don't see how anyone ever could.
I fail to see how the licensor establishing a mechanism to enforce the
licencse agreement risks your data, especially since you do not have to
have the authentification key to install and use the software for the
first 30 days, or so. In a doomsday scenario, in which MakeMusic
abandons Finale completely, and no further authentification keys are
made available, you will still be able to use Finale; assuming that the
authentification process is smart enough that it doesn't rely on the
system clock, all you have to do is re-install the software every 29
days; if it does rely on the system clock, all you need to do is to
reset the clock.
