For some reason, whenever I set up a percussion staff, I need 3 or 4 tries to obtain the sound I need. Even with the SETUP WIZARD the sound that plays is a whistle.

In one score I (after a lot of steps) was able to obtain a triangle, though later notes entered on the same staff on the same line had become whistles.

Any suggestions?

The percussion mapping sectin of Finale remains one of the hidden murky depths of the program that I think even the programmers are afraid to go near. Which explains why it remains so hard to work with and never seems to improve, even with the wizard.

I have found that if I select GM entry and playback and then edit it to select the notes I want, BEFORE entering any notes, that I can get the sounds I need. When the moon is in the correct phase, I have tossed a dead black cat over my left shoulder while chanting the mantra over and and over again "I'm sorry I'm trying to use a percussion staff, I'm sorry I'm trying to use a percussion staff" and then hitting the OK button exactly at the stroke of midnight during a thunderstorm.

It ain't easy, but it can be done. But except for the outlines which I have posted from time to time, I can't pin down more precisely why it works sometimes and doesn't work other times.
