My response was based upon the fact that my newest Logitech device was also (as far as I can remember) labeled as an "optical" device, because the movement of the patterned trackball is determined optically. I still have to periodically remove the ball, and clean out the socket, paying particular attention to make sure that the window through thich the movement of the ball is determined is clean.
