However, as useful as I would find it, and despite the fact that I've requested it as an added feature for a couple of releases now, I don't think it's possible to attach a smart shape to a non staff item. I think the best way I can think of to achieve what you're looking to do is to copy the text into a new document, create a staff in that document, make the crescendo or decrescendo mark you want in the copy, draw a selection box around the item, export the selection as a graphic, and place the exported graphic into your original document.
Then, just perhaps, I might persuade you to send a feature request to the development team to add a feature to smart shapes that they coud be attached to non-musical items.
