Agreed, but with the caveat that this is only helpful if what you find on the Web is information that leads you to evidence of a genuine public domain (ie, pre-1923) source. Just finding the same text on some random website doesn't prove anything. Very likely that website is itself infringing the copyright, and copying from an infringer doesn't get you off the hook.
