Ah, I think I'm beginning to see the light. I have a Roland JV-35, with the expandable card. Fairly ancient by modern standards, I'm sure, but it seems to do a good job.

Thanks,

Dean

Errr... You cant.
What you can do is find a Soundfont file that you like it and use it instead
of the default that comes with Finale.

Now if you want Finale to play your synth with a particular sound of, say,
saxophone, you have to look in the manual to figure out the patch number of
the sound. Then you have to program an instrument in finale to send that
patch change before playing AND turn off internal playback.

If the sound that interest you is not in the main bank of the synth it might
be harder to tell Finale how to send the proper change but it can be done...
with luck.

Just out of curiosity, what synth do you have?

Ok, I realize this is a really basic question, but I'm a tyro at such
things. How does one load a given sound (file?) from one's synthesizer
into Finale? And when one does, does it automatically add to the
available instrument list?
