Thanks, Johannes, that's exactly what I wanted to say but wasn't in
front of Finale and couldn't remember the details. TG Tools takes care
of changing the noteheads and adding the beams, and also arranges things
so that it plays back correctly. You really couldn't as for an easier
way to achieve this effect.

Prior to some of the TG Tools being provided as additional plug-ins I
wasted *hours* doing workarounds (I do a lot of opera reductions), and
am still grateful to Finale for providing this particular labour saver!!

In fact, much simpler. Enter four quarter notes, select the measure with

mass mover, select TGTools Music->Tremolos..., (if necessary enter the 
number of beams and the same number of beams connected to the stems) and

click go. Done.

I just did it, and it does exactly what is wanted.
