I know that I can re-associate every file seperately, but I can't understand why "Change All" doesn't do what it is supposed to.

There are a few reasons...based on how the OS binds a document to an application. The OS looks in this order:

Creator Code-a 4 letter code of the "creating" application (maybe in your case it is seeing the version as a different application based on the code) that is imbedded in the document. This will override any of the other following criteria. So even if you have an appropriate file extension or file type, but your file has a creator code with it...the OS will continue to open the file using application that created it.

File Extension- this was why in my second e-mail I suggested trying to add a file extension to see if it would then work. That would mean that likely it wasn't a creator code issue that was causing the problem. But if this didn't work, the file may still be looking to the creator code first to determine which application it should open with. Remember, the creator code trumps the file extension.

File Type-The third place the OS will look if there is no creator code or file extension is the file type.

You may also try taking the old version of Peak off of your machine. (Maybe this is what you did with Finale?) That way, if it is a creator code issue, the OS may see the creator code, not find the creating application and move on to File Extension and then File Type. Then globally changing the application used to open such a file might work.

Not using it is not the answer.

Unfortunately, in some cases there is no choice but to do change them one at a time. You can however, select many files at once and change them using the method I described....

One last thing you may try, there is a $10 app that sometimes will sometimes work to fix this called X-Ray. See what you think.

Don't click the change all button. Close the Info window after you have selected the application (by navigating in the window that results from selecting "other" in the drop down menu), checked the "always open with" box and clicked add. Then go to the document and see if it is opening with the correct application version. You can also select several documents at a time and do this.

Which application are you trying to select? Finale?

Best,

Karen

Nope, same problem as before, as soon as I click change all it reverts back to what it was.

Hi Johannes,

Try going back to the get info window and from the drop down menu, choose "other" even if you see the app you want the file to open in listed. Then navigate to the application, check the "always open with" check box that is on the bottom left part of the window and click add.

Hope that fixes it. :-)

Best,

Karen

I have had this problem in the past with Finale, but I cannot remember how I solved it:

I want to default a certain file type to open with a certain program version. So I select one of the files, click Info, and change the application in the pop-up. I then click change all, but as soon as I do this the pop-up reverts back to the earlier application version.

I have already repaired permissions.

How do I fix this?
