What is the behavior of your system clock? Does the display on the screen match the actual time, or does this slow down, too?
The reason I ask is that I experienced exactly the same thing you are mentioning, and noted that the display and system clock did not match, and traced the problem to being infected by the virus or worm associated with "Osama found hanged". Cleaning the virus off my machine eliminated the problem. I experienced the problem back in July or August.
