DVD's and CD's are about the same....some bum ones will happen but DVD's have gotten much better. I wouldn't buy the really cheap ones though...just as with CD's.

BTW, Simon posted a link awhile back....for a program called SuperDuper, which I have looked at and I like it. <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22126> It's like Carbon Copy Cloner..some may even like it better though.

Not that I disagree, just beware that CD-Rs are not necessarily a very reliable backup media. More reliable than Floppies or Zips, but not problem-free. I have had several fail on me in the past. Always make duplicates if you use them.

Does anyone know how reliable DVD-Rs are compared to CD-Rs? More or less reliable?

You've received several good suggestions on backing up your internal hard drive. Whatever method you decide to use, you still may want to copy all of your really, REALLY important files to one or more CDs and place those off-premises (your office, a friend's house, a safe deposit box, etc.). If your place burns down or your 'puter gets stolen, at least you will have those important files elsewhere. I do that with DVD-RAM disks.

BTW, I see that Iomega (Zip disk maker) now makes something called a "Rev" drive. Each Rev cartridge holds a 35 GB hard disk that is removable and durable. There's a review in this month's MacWorld.
