Handbells are definitely not part of GM. Since the entire piece is a handbell piece I was just using a sf2 file with 2 or 3 handbell patches in place of the default finale file. But, I but ran into the problems I've described. Your suggestion is one I had not thought of. However, I don't have Vienna (altough I keep seeing it mentioned on various web sites). The only editor I could find (that had the ability import krz and edit sf2 fils) is too expensive for me to have to buy for converting one patch. Unfortunately, the demo version doesn't allow saving anything but a single instrument. I don't have a sound card (or anything but Finale) that uses SF2 files so no way to do anything with them except what Finale provides and what freeware I can find. (I also have linux available if you know of any linux freeware material for linux). Since writing my initial note on the mailing list, I've discovered that other sf2 files also will not always playback correctly in Finale. I have yet to see if audio files produced by the finale save as audio feature will work or not. If I change the midi device to either Roland-VSC, Microsoft GS Wavetable, or Santa Cruz DSL synth (the devices I have) and then set it back to SmartMusic Synth, they work fine (although the handbell patch usually doesn't work). So, I'm trying to track down a bare-bones sf2 editor - the ones I run across are overkill for what I need. If not, I'll move on to something else and not worry about trying to use the smartmusic synth feature. (The Roland VSC I have, a software synth, has all the GS sounds and is better than the smartmusic synth, but alas, nothing has handbells). Thanks for the idea.
