Select the Smart Shape tool, and then the Line Tool. Hold down the shift key as you double-click and drag -- this will constrain the line to be either horizontal or vertical, depending on which direction you start dragging in.
(The same thing works with the hairpin tools. Hold down the shift key, and your hairpins will be horizontal as you place them.)
