I'm using 2K3. A filled block (text or graphics) will not cover notes, ties
or slurs in the measure in which it was created. It will cover lyrics and
time signatures on screen, as well as items outside the measure in which it
was created -- a kluge that might work, depending on the printer driver (it
works in PDF, but not with my Xerox printer).

Often the success of using the masking ability of an opaque shape (or whatever) is related to Finale's  object drawing order. It is best to attach the opaque mask to a later item (perhaps in the next measure) to insure that it draws later than the items you want it to cover. Then you can drag it left and it will become an effective mask. Remember to assign the mask to a metatool if you will be using more than one so they can be sized individually.
