I agree with you 100%, Johannes, and have been considering adopting a
stricter policy when doing charts as opposed to simple transpositions for
actors and singers.

My client can have whatever she wants. I just wish she would *say* what
she wants when she proofs things the first or second or third time.
Here is how I handle this: I tell my clients that they will have two
correction runs for the price (I usually make a price per source ie
manuscript page). The first correction run they can change things within
limits (although that doesn't include adding measures, since this screws up
a lot of work), the second correction run is only for errors (the odd wrong
note, a missing accidental, things like that) and layout problems (page
turns etc).
After that I charge. I make that very clear from the beginning. Naturally
when just tiny things pop up after the second run I am very happy to just
do them for nothing, making the client happy.
I had to adopt a very strict system like this because one of my clients
bombarded me regularly with such major changes after the fifth correction
run that I was not making enough money. He decided that this is the only
way he can work, so now he pays me (I do this approximately by the hour,
with some guidelines, ie there is a fixed price for adding measures). This
way I can then give him reductions when things go more smoothly than
anticipated and he is happy.
