Hi Linda,

Try turning Human Playback OFF -- you might get better results that way.

Listers, I have been using Finale since version zero, or whatever, in the 80s.
I use it primarily as a print program, but sometimes I use the playback for my own amusement or (especially with the newer versions' ability to create a decent playback with the embedded instruments) for rehearsal tracks for vocalists, etc.

I'm using Mac2004b. Good fast computers, no problems anywhere EXCEPT:

I'm having the devil's own time with dynamics, and I'm trying to make a rehearsal CD for vocals rehearsal before we do the live instruments. But the dynamics are all over the place. For starters:

1) Many of the dynamics, for no reason I can discern, simply don't do what the velocities say they will. A sfz marked at velocity in the 90s, sounds wimpy... just like the mp that came before it.

2) Many of the dynamics, again I'm baffled, begin the note AFTER the one where I have placed it. This is even true when the dynamic is asked to start at the beginning of the measure. I have to put it in the previous measure to make it take effect.

3) Dynamics in other parts often affect the whole score. Or part of it, with a soft string part suddenly going ballistic because of a forte or mezzo forte in the woodwinds.

When dynamics are in one staff only, I have indicated "this staff only" or, in desperation, given it the "note" rather than the measure placement. Doesn't seem to matter.

Help. Where did I go wrong?

I've been using 2004 for some time, and Finale in some version forever, but this is the first time I've been this frustrated.

Any help much appreciated!
