Steven,
It depends...
Setting it to "Fixed Channel" will give the sound assigned to the fixed 
channel, regardless of what staff you're working on, so you may be entering 
notes for a sax but hearing a trumpet as you enter.  Setting to "smart" or 
"direct" will give you the sound of the instrument for which you are entering 
the notes. FWIW, I have it set to "smart."

                I just purchased an Edirol PCR-30 Midi controller keyboard and 
I am having difficulty setting the keyboard to play sounds WHILE I'm inputting 
notes.  Playback happens fine, but I just can't hear what I'm inputting.
