Do you not think it is strange Finale has a separate default for
SmartScan?  I wonder what scenario anyone would benefit from it...

Sorry I was not clear.  The disappearance doesn't happen right away.  It
takes years.  The Finale files I never lost was up till version 2.6. 
Starting around version 3.2, I am getting this weird phenomenon.  I have
not experienced this with OSX yet, tho.
