Quite a few years ago, a civil libertarian, I forget who, aptly pointed out that the issue is not really privacy, but what people do with the information. I don't care if everybody knows I have an implanted defibrillator in my shoulder, but I would care if someone were to use that information to, say, jack up my insurance rates or take away my driver's licence.
On the specific issue at hand, I don't care--in fact, heartily approve--that anyone can easily find my email address. What I do care about is spam, a phenomenon that I do not find to be so indissolubly linked to the public dissemination of email addresses that the former can only be curbed at the expense of the latter.
