Aaron,

If musicians won't fight for our own interests, who will?

Maybe the Virtual Orchestra Machine will put us all out of business one day. Who knows? That doesn't mean we have to take it lying down.

Indeed! Boycott those shows who use computer-controlled lighting since it put lighting workers out of work! Boycott those shows who use sewing machines in their costume departments since they put all those hand-stitchers out of work! Boycott those shows who use word-processors for pre-press preparation of their playbills, since it put all those typesetters out of work!

What level of technology is allowable? When it's somebody ELSE's job that gets cut instead of your own?

We've lost the battle against technology, deal with it. While I feel sorry about the plight of Broadway musicians, I am afraid my boycotting of the shows which use synthesizers to replace live musicians won't mean much since I can't afford to travel to New York and attend a live show anyway. So I guess I'm putting the hotel workers out of work, as well as the musicians and actors, too, when I stay home and go to a movie instead of packing the family off for a weekend and a show in Manhattan.
