Brad, In my response a few minutes ago I still hadn't caught the mistake in my original post. I forgot to include the option key with the spacebar, but no click is needed.
So, as a recap, to achieve #4 in my original post (on a mac) hold the spacebar and option key and drag *without* clicking. Sorry for the confusion.
