In this case the basics aren't nearly enough. The devil is in the details, and there are LOTS of details! There are textbooks by both Wili Apel (on both black and white notation) and Carl Parish (on medieval notation), if you can find copies. But I suspect that the article on Notation in New Grove might be a good starting place.
