Noel Stoutenburg crit:My first chant tutor, as it were, was the introduction from the Liber Usualis, the beginning of which provides a good basic framework of information. That's the first place I'd go to advise finding more information. Though it's not nearly as comprehensive as the books John recommends, I suspect a copy might be more easily accessible in France.
Thanks. I happen to own a copy, and it does have a detailed introduction... in Latin.
For those who don't know, there are (or were) a variety of different editions. Mine has the Introduction and rubrics in English but the music is in square chant notation, making it exactly what I needed. Got it in grad school for $9.95 (sigh....)!
