You reference to 12 x 18 paper caught my eye, what brand of
paper do you use? And what size do you buy it in? I've found
determing paper brand, what sizes the manufacture offers it in,
which way the grain is running for a particular size
and what you can cut it down to (keeping in mind the grain) while minimizing waste is very complex investigation and merits
discussion, especially for someone about to undertake it for the
first time.
