I concur with all of this. Unless you've got a rare exceptional case, spelling out letters adds more confusion than it removes.


The "dou-ble U" is not entirely theoretical for me, as once upon a time I concocted an alternate lyric for "Embraceable You" in which one of the lines was "M-A-R, K-D-L-E-dou-ble-U". (Yet another verse describing the first might call it a C-L-E-R-I-H-E-dou-ble-U....)
