Ah, so that's the  problem.  Until fairly recently it was, to all intents and 
purposes,   impossible to send AOL e-mails in plain text - I believe it was 
actually  possible if you had a degree in computer programming and a few hours 
to spend on  every e-mail.  (I once saw a set of instructions which ran to two 
pages of  typed A4.)

They have at last upgraded the system and now it's just a  matter of 
selecting the off screen "compose as plain text" button from a drop  down menu, 
but as 
far as I know it still isn't possible to make it the  default.  It's now a 
question of remembering to do it.
