This blurred distinction in terminology between "composing" and  "writing" 
should not be abandoned - from this comes the horn player's favourite  joke 
which he tries to get into every programme note about the Beethoven Horn  
Sonata - 
its first performance date is earlier than the date of  its composition.  
 
Having written the two dates in the programme, the wily horn player then  
sits back and waits for some know-it-all member of the great British public to  
come and mock at the misprint, the joke being that Beethoven improvised the  
piano part at its first perfomance and "wrote" the complete work  later.
