Hey all,
I have a question about muted pizzicato in an orchestral string section. I'm curious how much the mutes actually dampen the pizz. sound, and how much impact they have on the actual timbre. Do any examples from the literature leap to mind?
Hi, Darcy. A mute dampens the pizz sound exactly as much as it dampens the arco sound. That's really all you need to know, not examples from the literature (and no, examples don't leap to mind, but I've probably played some in the last week!). They are two different special effects, and can be used separately or together.
