I had a lengthy exchange with a MM rep. about this. In the end he insisted the current behavior is by design. If so, I would be very interested to know whom it benefits. Meanwhile, anyone who is as annoyed by the behavior as I am should let them know in no uncertain terms.
There is a lot about the new copying behaviour that gives me heartburn, too. This is only one more instance.
I have no doubt that it is by design. The design sucks, though.
