Not knowing much about a Mac, but the mouse pointer options in Windows have a box you can check that says:
"Show me the pointer when I press the CTRL key."
This makes the pointer do a flashing "target" guy.
What I usually do is have an "animated" rainbow pointer that is constantly changing color making it more visible.
