Listers,
I am writing because one of the G4 Macs at my school, is having Finale
related problems. We can't seem to get the configuration correct so that
the Mac, Finale (3.5) and the MIDI keyboard can "see" each other.
We are using a MacMan interface, but need a step by step guide as to how
to configure things. Can anyone draw me an outline?
I can't give you a step-by-step (that might be more a question for the tech support guys) but I can relate a few issues I have had. I gather you have tried copying the configuration from a working system? (you mentioned "one of the G4s", so I assume you have a few.)
First of all if you are running Fin 3.5 (!) you must be booting in OS9? One issue I had in OS9 is that I constantly lost MIDI when the computer woke from sleep. Most often, going to the MIDI menu>MIDI Setup... then selecting None for the input device and None for the output device, then going back and putting them back to the original settings would sort things out. Occasionally this didn't work and I had to reboot the computer. If you are running in Classic, well, I never got MIDI to work consistently in Classic, ever, even after they said they had fixed it.
Also, are you ABSOLUTELY certain that all the cables and devices are working? Swap each device and cable in the non-working system, one at a time, onto a working system to see if the working system still works. Start with the MIDI keyboard and work your way toward the computer. I get nabbed by this one all the time, and assumptions always turn around and bite me. In the computer lab at my school, they keep kicking out the power plug to the MIDI keyboard, so that's the first thing I look for now.
Beyond this, I would email tech support, as I always just messed around until I got it to work. (Isn't that appalling? I know!)
