A given thing is possible or it isn't. With movable type, beaming was not possible. With manuscript it was. But the choice of whether to USE something that is possible depends on tradition, training, and fashion.

I don't know the basis upon which you assert that beaming is not possible with moveable type. I have numerous exemplars of music printed with moveable type, which incorporates beaming. While my exemplars do not date to the fifteenth or sixteenth century, and while I don't know how early the typographical techniques which permitted beaming with musical type were developed, it has been possible for a very long time..
