Can we really talk about "typical" contrabasses in any time or place?


Of course we can: in 2005, a typical American cb has 4 strings, tuned E A D G. Certainly a great many insts. are not typical, but that does not mean that a typical variety cannot be identified, nor that its prevalence is marginal or unimportant.
