Is there a slicker way of inserting a gap before a bar in the middle of a
system than creating a bar that you hide with a staff style? If so, somebody
please share it with me!

Here's what I do: I place a placemarker at the end of the bar, before the coda would go (I use a guide, or smartshape, whichever suits my fancy at the moment), push the measures after the guide to the next system, and define the width of the system to the left of the bar so that it lines up with the place marker. Then, I take the left margin of the next system (which contains the beginning of the coda, and move it to the right, to the point where I want the gap to end. Then I drag the lower system up so that the top and bottom margins of the "lower" system (on the right) match the top and bottom margins of the "upper" system (on the left).

No staff style, no need to adjust measure regions, no need to...
