I know for sure that the string bass sound should be good. It's my instrument, and the attack and shaping of the notes are mine, and idiomatically in the ball park.

That's great! Can he include your line, phrasing, and time as well? And your taste? No? Oh well. 8-(

Also, in my own case, the instrumental colors and balances are pretty accurately stored in my own memory, and sometimes my mental playback is better than the computer's.

I think most musicians' ideas of colour and balance (past the level of student) is better than the computer's. When I first got Finale I thought I would use playback all the time to "be able to hear how it sounds." I was so wrong. I actually could judge how it was going to sound with live instruments better than the playback made it sound, pretty much 100% of the time even WITHOUT the playback. After a bit of time using playback for confirmation purposes, I stopped completely, and now only use it for proofing note errors and occasionally to help clients hear what I'm intending.

But I fear that bass players around here might compare badly with your playing. Oh, wait a minute, the line, time, phrasing, etc., will be MINE, not yours (except for the time, which will be mechanical and all from Finale). OK, they have nothing to worry about then. 8-)
