Self extracting files are hardware and operating system dependent. At least on the PC, self extracting files are executable programs.

As far as unzipping on a PC, if the target machine is XP, then the windows explorer will automatically treat the zip file like a folder. If on a prior version, use either WinZip (shareware) or 7-Zip (open source freeware at http://www.7-zip.org/).

Are self-extracting archives cross-platform? I had always assumed not, so I never use them, as I have to communicate with PCers and Mackers alike.
