and as a user, I can say that they are in fact fonts, and do not "reprogram" the keyboard. They are accessed by pressing keys on the keyboard (and, since there are items mapped into the extended areas, using the ALT-nnnn convention to access characters mapped there), with the various notational elements needed for plainsong notation are spread across three fonts (MeinradA, ~B, and ~C). Yes, you access the characters by typing on the keyboard, but your keyboard is not affected in any way differently than it would be by selecting some other font.
