IMO Captivate is overly expensive just like all other Macromedia software. (And FWIW Captivate isn't a native Macromedia product, just 1.5 years ago this was a freeware product called RoboDemo.)
There are a big array of different capture solutions for Windows. Make sure to test them all (all I have tested have demo versions), so you get exactly what you need! Captivate (Macromedia), Camtasia (Techsmith), InstantDemo (NetPlay), TurboDemo (TurboDemo) are the most popular high-end products. If you OTOH just want to record to AVI, there are freeware tools for that.
