Aside from changes to engraver slurs in Finale 2005 (which may or may not fix the problems I've had), have any of the large number of bugs I've posted about recently been fixed since Finale 2003? It doesn't seem that way to me. The other issue is that most of these are things that date back many, many versions. You may find it incomprehensible for someone to complain that the piece of software they've been using for 15 years still has massive bugs in basic functionality, but I find it incomprehensible that anyone other than a professional engraver who makes their living with Finale would pay the upgrade tax and buy Finale every year. No single version of Finale has ever had enough improvements in it to justify the whole upgrade price from the previous version, in my opinion, so I don't understand how people think they are getting their money's worth. And, unless I'm mistaken, MakeMusic still supports versions of Finale that are a couple of years old. The answer to my bug complaints may very well be "fixed in a newer version," but it's sad to me that that is only every seldom the answer. That right there is one of the reasons I don't think it's worth upgrading. Of course, for me, the blocking issue at this point is the lack of key escrow on the authorization. Other than that, I'd probably be due for another upgrade this year or next, since each version since 2003 seems to have had one significant improvement that I'd like to have, but can certainly do without. But so far as I can see, the massive number of bugs and inconsistencies in copying functionality remain unfixed in the most reason version of Finale. If not, why hasn't someone said so? -- David W.
