Yes of course, that's entirely up to you. But it seems to me that if MM
produces an upgrade involving new features and improvements in existing
elements then it is not unreasonable of them to ask for payment. I
always upgrade at the earliest opportunity and have never regretted
doing so.

I don't think anybody has said it's unreasonable of them to ask for
payment. But it's been several versions since something extremely
earth-shaking has been introduced (staff-styles are the last really
major feature I find helpful), so for many there aren't enough new
features, or the new features wouldn't affect their work-flow enough and
so for such people the annual upgrade fee that MakeMusic forces
(especially if people work with others who DO upgrade) can be an
economic drain.
Those of us who are self-employed in the music business can at least
take the upgrade fee as a tax deduction as a legitimate business
expense, but hobbyists can't.
So for them it can easily be a financial burden with few worthwhile gains.
Especially when some things remain broken, version after version.
