My cup mute wasn't particularly expesive. When I bought it ca. 1992, I think it was under $40. (Humes and Berg mutes have one virtue: they are not typically that expensive.) By comparison, a top-of-the-line Balu straight mute is about $150.

I bought the cup mute to use in a piece that I wrote myself in 1992. After that, the mute sat on the shelf until Christmas 2002. Then suddenly I had two gigs in within 2 weeks that called for it. One was "light" music. The other was the Erb Concerto for Brass Instruments. I shared it with the third player, as each part called for it at different times. (Now it's back on the shelf.)

The horn cup mute produces a very interesting and unusual sound. I'm surprised it is so little called for.

There is also a cup mute - rarely used and very expensive. It is sometimes asked for in light music. The one I saw was in a shop. I have only ever heard of one person who actually possesses one of these mutes and he was trying to sell it.
