Everyone in the press is saying that this announcement will lead to an "Osborne effect," referring to the new product announcement that led to the death of Osborne Computer back in the early 80s (they announced the Osborne II months before it would be available, so everyone who was contemplating buying an Osborne I held off buying. Result: sales dropped to near zero and Osborne Computer folded), but it seems to me just as likely that with the announcement coming out this far ahead that many people, like you, would consider snapping up a current computer, to weather the rought patch during the transition. It really depends on how long Apple continues producing OS X versions that run on PowerPC. If with the release of MacIntel boxes no new version of OS X will run on PowerPC, that could be a big problem. But if a couple of versions work on both PowerPC and MacIntel (or come in alternative versions; can't imagine a single OS version that could run on both), then there won't be any real reason to avoid buying a current Mac. Also, it seems to me that many of the Mac users I know actually keep their computers longer than Windows users, so 3 or 4 years seems very much the fastest upgrade window I see for Mac users (it's more like a Windows upgrade schedule, though my clients tend to be 5 years or more, since I make them buy equipment that's going to last them that long, and am very conservative in moving to new technologies/software until after they've proven themselves; most of my clients are still using Office 97, for instance). -- David W.
