Yes, you have it right. 1 through 5 are hardwired, and 6 - 9 are assignable to transposition only.

Furthermore, the alphabetical keys are not available as metatools, but there are a few shortcuts hardwired there.

start mucking around with that -- this kind of thing belongs in the
program itself)?


I'm afraid so.

As Dennis B-K said once, if you need to do this a whole lot, there is something wrong with the UI. I tend to agree.
