I bought Finale, many years ago, to engrave. The playback was useful to me
almost entirely for checking notes.
However, the improvement in playback in the last three versions, with HP
and GPO, has been amazing. The improved playback is now extremely useful
to me. I can now make high-quality demo cds of my scores to give
conductors that surpass the quality I ever dreamed of. I love it. More
playback improvements? Bring them on!
(I never spent time learning sequencers, and never wanted to. Notation is
what I know, and what I work with. I always found sequencers frustrating,
and was always grateful to get back to Finale.)
Well said. If one's only interest is in engraving, playback is not
important. That user would prefer that all engraving software concentrate
only on graphic qualities. Try Lilypond, it's free!
However, I have discussed with several composers the ways in which Finale
(or Sibelius) change the way one writes music. The more realistic the sound,
the more effective the software.
The ability to generate a somewhat realistic sound file to present one's
music to potential buyers, publishers, or clients is growing in importance.
The user base for engraving software is quite varied. No one should assume
that others need to use the software the same way they do. Both graphic and
aural aspects of both Finale and Sibelius must continue to improve.
