Actually, I'm sure they did in fact test that. From descriptions by
others, it sounded like the install of Finale worked fine in that
case. But this is a matter of testing *other* applications to make
sure that they still worked after the procedure, which I strongly
doubt is part of their test suite.
For testing upgrade installations, you'd often start with a clean box,
install an old version of Finale, then install the new one, and make
sure that the installs put everything in the right place. You're not
going to see your impact on other applications like that.
This really is a bad QA.
This is certainly a bad installer design. I'm not convinced it's a
bad QA.
But the applications it has trashed are standard Mac applications, it
seems. The e-mail address book? C'mon, now, how rare is that?
Why not, after making sure the installer works on a clean box, and works
on a clean box with an install of the previous version of Finale, then
test on a typical box, with standard Mac applications. Nothing exotic,
but then this installer didn't trash anything exotic.
This, well it works on our non-real-world machine so it must be perfect
attitude is bad QA for those of us who work on real-world machines.
There must be a Mac at MakeMusic which does e-mail -- why not test it on
that and then make sure the e-mail still works. How hard would that
have been? How pissed-off would tech-support department have been if
THEIR e-mail address books were trashed?
MakeMusic has plenty of machines for testing things on. Good QA would
have tested those machines as well, and then made sure those machines
went on working properly after the installation.
