My mind is dizzy from going through 500 posts that appeared in my

the full versions of GPO and GPO Jazz library - that they will not
integrate as transparently as the GPO "lite" that comes with 2006.
Well, I just had a phone conversation with Gary in which he assured me
that this would not be the case, and that that is what has delayed the
release of GPO Jazz. They are working on that now and expect to
achieve the same level of transparency that exists with the included
sounds. Please don't blame me if that turns out not to be the case,
but the conversation was reassuring.
Hey Chuck,
Right now, there is no possible way that the HP in Fin2006 can possibly
handle all the keyswitches for the brass mutes included in the GPO
Jazz/Big Band edition. I have talked about this with Robert PiƩchaud,
the creator of Human Playback. At this point, HP just doesn't catch
jazz mutes like "cup," "harmon," "bucket," etc. Full, automatic HP
integration with the Jazz/Big Band set will have to wait until Fin2007
(or, possibly, a maintenance upgrade of Fin2006).
I heard some of the jazz samples on a site that Gary put up, and they
sound OK to me,
They *do* sound pretty good. The saxophones sound much better than I
expected. Overall, I expect I will be happy with this library.
except for the drum set with sticks,
Yes, I agree that is completely awful.
and I think that is a result of Gary hiring a drummer whose idea of
tuning drums is to avoid all resemblance to the sound of any classic
jazz drummer - Max, Philly Joe, Elvin, Roy Haynes - whoever. The
drums are totally dead - in the style of some rock drummers (my
un-favorites). Go here and check it out and let Gary know, if you
agree (while there's still time to do something about this. I know
someone here in Bellingham, easily accessible to Gary, who could
provide perfectly acceptable jazz drum sounds for Gary to record, if
he wants to correct this.)
Unfortunately, I doubt that Gary has the time to correct this for
release. If he does, that would be my #1 priority. The drums with
sticks are easily the weakest part of the demos I heard. Regardless, I
would like to add my strongest possible support for sampling an actual
jazz drummer for the first upgrade to the Jazz/GPO Edition. You are
quite right, the drummer they sampled is unacceptable and a bit of an
embarrassment. You are wrong, though -- he doesn't sound like a rock
drummer. He sounds like a BAD drummer. (Phil Selway, from Radiohead,
one of my favorite rock drummers, doesn't tune his drums ANYTHING like
the guy they sampled.)
The drum kit with brushes sounds acceptable to me.
Yeah, the "GPO drummer" does sound better on brushes. But we need
mallets, too! (These will be included in the update, I hope!)
The bass sounds are OK - for samples. The second set is my bass, and
too thin sounding for my taste, but we are going to work on getting
some more fundamental into the spectral balance.
You are right, the second bass is the only acceptable one, and it is
(thankfully!) identifiable as you. I am glad you are working on the
balance, though -- it does need work.
I am only a part of this as much as Gary is interested in including
me. He does ask my opinion, so there's some effect, but final
decisions are not mine to make.
I hope Gary gives your opinions the weight they deserve! You are an
incredible asset to this project, and I hope he realizes how lucky he
is that you are willing to lend your personal credibility to his
library.
I am trying to get what I'd like to use, and I'm hoping that might
satisfy the needs of others too.
I'm pretty sure anything that passes muster by your ears will be fine
by everyone else.
Cheers,
- Darcy
